1«Οι άνθρωποι πρέπει να αισθανθούμε τον διπλανό μας, όχι μόνο τον εαυτό μας, αλλά και τον άλλο που είναι δίπλα μας. Και να
κάνουμε μέσα μας πράξη την αγάπη. Υπάρχουν πολλοί που υποφέρουν και ταυτόχρονα υπάρχουν πράγματα που σ’ εμάς περισσεύουν. Και ό,τι περισσεύει μπορεί να αξιοποιηθεί για εκείνους που δεν έχουν».
Με αυτά τα λόγια ο π. Μανώλης από τον Ιερό Ναό του Αγίου Νεκταρίου καλωσόρισε χθες τον κόσμο που παραβρέθηκε στη χριστουγεννιάτικη γιορτή των παιδιών που φιλοξενούνται στη Στέγη του Αγίου Νεκταρίου. Τα 15 παιδιά είχαν προετοιμάσει στο πλαίσιο της γιορτής τραγούδια, ποιήματα και ένα θεατρικό, ενώ δέχθηκαν τον κόσμο με ζεστασιά και κεράσματα που παρασκεύασαν τα ίδια.
Μιλώντας στα «Χ.Ν.» στο περιθώριο της εκδήλωσης ο π. Μανώλης επεσήμανε ότι η κοινωνία των Χανίων έχει αγκαλιάσει τη Στέγη του Αγίου Νεκταρίου: «Αξίζει πράγματι τον κόπο ο κόσμος να δείξει την αλληλεγγύη του διότι τα παιδιά αυτά στερούνται της οικογένειας και χρειάζονται την οικογενειακή στοργή και θαλπωρή. Αυτή προσπαθούμε να αναπληρώσουμε όσο γίνεται διότι ένας πατέρας και μια μάνα δεν μπορούν να αντικατασταθούν ποτέ», ανέφερε σχετικά και πρόσθεσε ότι από τη δεκαετία του ’60 που ξεκίνησε το συγκεκριμένο έργο η μακαριστή γερόντισσα Αμφιλοχία -κατά κόσμον Μαρία Κουφάκη- έχουν περάσει από τη Στέγη της εκκλησίας εκατοντάδες παιδιά, πολλά εκ των οποίων έκαναν οικογένεια.
«Η τοπική κοινωνία βεβαίως και έχει αγκαλιάσει την προσπάθεια και πρέπει να πούμε ότι το έργο αυτό είναι καθαρά της εκκλησίας τους Αγίου Νεκταρίου και κανενός άλλου. Ποτέ δεν υπήρξε χρηματοδότηση από πουθενά, ούτε από κρατικούς φορείς ούτε από άλλους εκκλησιαστικούς παράγοντες ούτε καν από τη Μητρόπολη. Αυτοδιοίκητα γίνεται. Ο κόσμος, λοιπόν, έχει γνωρίσει αυτό το έργο, το έχει βοηθήσει και το έχει στηρίξει με τη χάρη και τη βοήθεια του Αγίου Νεκταρίου. Και όπως έλεγε και η κα Μαρίκα όσο θέλει ο Άγιος θα υπάρχει αυτό το έργο. Εμείς πάντως δεν είπαμε ποτέ όχι σε όποιο παιδί έχει ανάγκη».

The children had fun singing Christmas songs and dancing traditional dances. From the children of the Shelter of Saint Nektarios:

With these words father Manolis from the Holy Temple of Saint Nektarios welcomed yesterday the people who attended the Christmas party of the children that are hosted in the Shelter of Saint Nektarios. The 15 children had prepared as part of the celebration songs, poems and a play while receiving the world with warmth and treats that they prepared themselves.
Speaking on “CH.N.” during the event father Manolis noted that the society of Chania has embraced the Shelter of Saint Nektarios: “It is worthwhile for people to show solidarity because these children are deprived of family and they need family affection and warmth. It is this warmth that we try to make up for as much as possible, because a father and a mother can never be replaced, he said, and added that from the 60s that the particular project started by the late Gerontissa Amphilochia -in world Maria Koufaki- hundreds of children have gone through the Shelter of the church, many of whom eventually had families.
“The local community has certainly embraced the effort and we have to say that this project is clearly of the church of Saint Nektarios and nobody else. There has never been funding from anywhere, neither government nor ecclesiastic agencies or even from the Metropolis. It is self-governed. The people have come to know this project, have helped and supported it by the grace and help of Saint Nektarios. And as Mrs. Marika used to say, as long as the Saint wishes it, this project will exist. We, whatever the case, have never said no to any child in need.”
